Life Adjustment and Grief
During life we can go through many phases, losses, and adjustments. As we navigate such times we can experience considerable anxiety, depression, and existential distress.
Therapy for Life Adjustments, Change, and Grief
When life changes we can be challenged to our core. Life changes might include the end of a relationship, loss of a loved one, end of a job, career, or injury. It can include any phase or shift in our life, when we are growing, or have to change as a person. Life is not static although we might often prefer it to be that way. During times of Life adjustment and grief supportive therapy can help.
When such changes occur we often have to contend with a degree of anxiety and uncertainty. Furthermore, when these adjustments persist over time we can also start to feel significant symptoms of depression and grief. If there is a sudden and unexpected loss of a love one we might experience a traumatic reaction.
Such changes might bring in to question our purpose, meaning, and faith. There can be a lull to life or intense periods of sadness, anger, denial, shock, or disbelief can occur. We might feel acutely stuck, blocked, or trapped with life not knowing how to proceed. When such shifts occur our entire identity, sense of self, sense of the world, or ego formation can be questioned.
Life Adjustment and Grief Treatment
In these instances it can be worth processing your experience with a trained psychologist. The purpose here is often twofold.
First, therapy can help you to process emotions and feelings associated with the shift. Deep feeling of sadness, anger, shame, and guilt can often be worked through a bit quicker. Furthermore, therapy often helps to work through states of aloneness, helplessness, fear, and/or meaninglessness.
Second, therapy helps to navigate and arrive at the new phase of life. This might be finding new value or purpose, holding and letting go of grief, achieving acceptance, letting go of guilt, forgiveness, or arriving at some other psychological state such as contentment. The process of treatment is never linear but can involve reworking emotions and feelings that continue to resurface over time.
Overall, I can help you explore the specific aspects of your life adjustment or grief. I take a non-pathologizing approach to simply accompany and work at a pace that is comfortable for you.
